Tarot birth card calculator

Your birth card is the Major Arcana card that your date of birth reduces to once you add the month, the day, and the year together and keep adding the digits until the number is small enough to be a card. Some dates produce two, and a few produce three. The calculator below does the arithmetic and shows its working, and the method is written out underneath so you can check it on paper.

The date never leaves your browser. There is no account, no email, and nothing is sent to a server.

The calculator needs JavaScript. If it is off, the method is written out in full under how the reduction works and takes about a minute with a pen, and all twenty-two cards are linked at the foot of this page.

Nothing is saved and nothing is sent anywhere. The arithmetic happens on this page, in your browser.

How the reduction works

There is one standard method and it is worth stating openly rather than hiding behind a button, because a calculator you cannot check is a calculator you have to trust. Take 14 June 1987 as the worked example.

  1. Write the date out as three numbers

The month, the day, and the full four digit year. 14 June 1987 is 6, 14, and 1987. Use the calendar date on your birth certificate rather than a date adjusted for a time zone, because the method works on the written date.

  2. Add all three together

Six plus fourteen plus one thousand nine hundred and eighty seven is 2007. This first total is always a four digit number and is never a card by itself, which is why the next step exists.

  3. Add the digits of that total, and keep going until it is 22 or less

Two plus zero plus zero plus seven is 9. If the sum had come to 28 you would add again, two plus eight, and get 10. Stop as soon as the number is 22 or lower, because 22 is as high as the Major Arcana goes.

  4. If you have landed on 10 or higher, reduce once more

A number from 10 to 21 is a card in its own right and also reduces to a second one. Twenty reduces to 2, so 20 gives Judgement and The High Priestess. Nineteen is the one number that produces three cards, because 19 goes to 10 and 10 then goes to 1. A total of 10 takes that same last step and stops there, with two.

  5. Read 22 as The Fool

Twenty two is the only total that does not reduce. There are 22 Major Arcana and they are numbered 0 to 21, so a total of 22 wraps to the card numbered zero and you have one birth card rather than two.

That date gives a single card. Six plus fourteen plus 1987 is 2007, and two plus zero plus zero plus seven is 9, which is The Hermit. A date that reduced to 20 instead would carry two: Judgement and, reducing two plus zero, The High Priestess.

How birth cards fall, counted

Nearly every page on this subject opens by telling you that most people have two birth cards. Run the reduction over every date from 1925 to 2025, which is 36,890 of them, and that turns out to be false. 54.4% of dates give a single card, 40.4% give two, and 5.2% give three.

The reason is arithmetic rather than anything to do with the deck. For anyone born from the late nineteen fifties onward, the month, the day, and the year usually add to a total in the two thousands, and the digits of a number beginning with 2 sum into single figures far more often than the digits of one beginning with 19. Birth cards are distributed by the calendar, and the calendar changed in the year 2000.

The same count settles which cards are common. The Lovers is the most frequent first card at 9.5% of dates, with The Hierophant and The Chariot behind it. The rarest is The High Priestess, at 1.0%.

And one card in the Major Arcana never appears as a first birth card at all in that century: The Magician. Landing on it would require a total whose digits sum to exactly 1, which no plausible birthday produces. It arrives underneath a higher card instead, on 4,098 dates in the century, 11.1% of them: 2,162 reduce to Wheel of Fortune, which carries it as a second card, and 1,936 reach The Sun, which passes through Wheel of Fortune on the way down and is the only shape that gives anyone three. If The Magician is yours, it arrived the hard way.

All twenty-two, ranked

The same count with the other seventeen cards left in, ordered by how many of the 36,890 dates give that card first. A card numbered 10 or higher always carries a lower one down with it. A card numbered 9 or less never splits, so the last column says which higher card it arrives under instead, which is the only way it turns up when it is not first.

What it means to have two

The pair is more than a first choice and a runner up. The usual reading is that the higher card describes the pattern other people can see and the lower one describes what is driving it, which is why the pair so often reads as a cause and its expression. The Tower at 16 reducing to The Chariot at 7 can be read as a life of abrupt reversals underwritten by a will to keep steering; the same two cards in the other order would be a different claim, and the reduction only runs one way.

If you have one card, the number was small enough that it never split. That is no lesser result and, given the count above, a common one. It means the arithmetic landed inside the first nine cards, where the Major Arcana is at its most elemental, and you have one image to learn rather than two.

Where this comes from, honestly

This is numerology applied to a tarot deck. It is not something the Rider-Waite-Smith imagery asserts, and it is not in the older European tradition the deck descends from. The method as it is used today was popularized in the twentieth century, notably by Angeles Arrien and by Ruth Ann and Wald Amberstone at The Tarot School, and the reason every calculator agrees is that they are all running the same modern convention rather than recovering an old one.

We say so because the rest of this site is careful about the difference between what a card's picture shows and what somebody later decided it means, and a calculator is no reason to stop being careful. What a birth card is good for is narrow and useful: it hands you one Major Arcana card to know properly. Learning one card thoroughly is a far better way into a deck of seventy-eight than skimming all of them, and this is as good a way of picking one as any.

Birth card, year card, card of the day

Three things get confused with each other. A birth card is fixed for life and comes from your date of birth. A year card swaps the birth year for the current one and so changes every birthday, which makes it a different calculation with a different purpose. A card of the day is drawn rather than calculated and is not about you at all: it describes the day in front of you.

This page does the first of the three. If what you want is a card to read against today rather than against your life, the daily draw is the one to use, and it deals from all seventy-eight rather than from the twenty-two.

The twenty-two Major Arcana

Every possible result, in order, from The Fool at zero to The World at twenty-one. Each one has a page with the upright and reversed meanings in full, what it says in love, career, and money, and what is visible in the illustration that the meaning is read from.

Common questions

What is my tarot birth card?
Your tarot birth card is the Major Arcana card you get by adding the month, day, and four digit year of your birth together and then reducing that total by adding its digits until it is 22 or lower. If that number is 10 or higher it reduces once more and you have two cards. A total of 22 reads as The Fool, and a total of 9 or less gives a single card.
Do most people have one birth card or two?
One, though most tarot sites say otherwise. Counting every date from 1925 to 2025, 36,890 of them, 54.4% reduce straight to a single card, 40.4% produce two, and 5.2% produce three. The reason is arithmetic rather than mysticism: for anyone born after the late nineteen fifties the month, day and year usually add to a total beginning with a 2, whose digits sum into single figures and never split.
What is the most common tarot birth card?
The Lovers, on 9.5% of dates between 1925 and 2025, followed by The Hierophant and The Chariot. The rarest is The High Priestess at 1.0%. The Magician never comes up at all as a first card in that century. It arrives only underneath a higher card, on 4,098 dates, or 11.1% of them.
Is the tarot birth card part of traditional tarot?
No, and the honest answer matters here. The reduction is numerology applied to a deck, and it was popularized in the twentieth century by writers including Angeles Arrien and Ruth Ann and Wald Amberstone. Nothing in the Rider-Waite-Smith imagery or in the older European tradition assigns a card to a birthday. What makes it worth doing is that it gives you one Major Arcana card to know properly, which is a reasonable way into a deck of 78.
Does my birth card change?
No. It is fixed by a date that does not move, which is what separates it from a year card or a card of the day. Some readers also calculate a year card by swapping the birth year for the current one, and that does change annually. This page calculates the birth card only.
Is my birthday sent anywhere when I use this?
No. The calculation is a few lines of arithmetic that run in your browser, so the date you type never leaves the device and is not stored, logged, or sent to a server. Closing the tab is all it takes to be rid of it.

A birth card is one card out of seventy-eight and the least useful way to meet the other seventy-seven. Major Arcana has all twenty-two of the cards this calculator can return, with what the sequence is doing from The Fool to The World, and Minor Arcana has the fifty-six that describe the ordinary days rather than the large forces. All of them are in tarot card meanings. If you have never laid cards out before, tarot for beginners is the place to start, and tarot spreads compares the layouts once you want more than one card on the table.
